Welcome to Enterprise Search!Welcome to the April 2007 edition of Enterprise Search, your source for news and technical information to help you make your corporate search platform work right. First, a reminder that the Enterprise Search Summit is coming up quickly. Meet Dr Search at our booth Tuesday May 15 and Wednesday May 16 and register to win an iPod Shuffle! If you have not yet registered for the show, you can save $200 by following the link from our web site. Also, if are going to attend ESS, we're planning a 'birds of a feather' get-together at the Hilton Monday night May 14. Read the details in this month's What's New. This month we have some great articles for you. Mark Bennett writes about something we hear more often then you might think - people come to us because they have just written the best search engine ever, or they have an idea how they can make search analytics work perfectly. Mark's advice is usually to keep you day job: enjoy his observations on the people who know how easy search can be. Clinton Allen has written a detailed article on how to use the ODBC gateway to index Oracle or SQL Server content in Autonomy K2 Version 6.1. This is one of those things that has given IT staffs headaches for years, and we think Clinton has nailed the answer for you. Finally, we take a first look at the technical side of the IBM-Yahoo! free search software released last December. Our take? Not bad at all. It's not too late to complete our survey to be entered in the drawing for the iPod Shuffle on May 16, and remember to visit us on the web or at our new blog, and be sure to visit Dr Search in New York in May.
Table of contents: April 2007What's New - April 2007: Birds of a feather at ESS NY May 14, DieselPoint announces a new update, WSJ writes that context is king, Oracle sues SAP, and Microsoft and Google debate about who has the better enterprise solution. [More]. So you want to write a search engine?: Mark Bennett writes about people we see every month who come to us for help making their new search engine a success in the market. We like search technology, so we're happy to talk shop. And sometimes we even offer advice and assistance. Heck, we even started a search engine of our own back in the dot-com days - anybody remember SearchButton.com? But times have changed, the rules have changed, and in hindsight we would have done things differently. [More]. Indexing an ODBC data source K2: Indexing database content, whether from a content management system or simply text maintained in database tables is one of the most complex configuration options in K2. This month Clinton Allen gives us a Quick Start for building a K2 collection using Vspider and the ODBC gateway for Oracle and SQL Server on Windows or Unix! [More].First Look: IBM-Yahoo! Search Engine: Free is not just an open source benefit when it comes to search technology. This month, Miles Kehoe walks you through the features and benefits of OY!S, and provides a simple search form for you to use for more advanced searching. [More]. Dr. Search: The role of 'connectors' in enterprise search: This month Dr Search replies to a reader's question about connectors and indexing database content beyond the direct indexing also in this issue. The brief answer: they are worth it - sometimes. [More]. Remember to send your tough search questions to Dr. Search at support@ideaeng.com.
