IBM Working to Obsolete Text Search
In the New York Times, James Fallows reports that IBM researchers find text search like Google and Verity are at risk of being irrelevant in the face of discovery systems and multimedia content. In an article on December 26, he discusses a recent visit to IBM research facilities where researchers are looking into the way we will really want to find things in the future.
Google Introduces Smaller Search Appliance
I'm sure you've heard about the new Mac mini announced by Apple Computer last week, but did you notice that Google now has a Google Mini priced at $4995?
The Google Mini allows you to index up to 50,000 documents in most popular formats. and do it seemlessly. If you have non-web content such as databases, or you have special indexing or search needs including security, the Google boxes may not be your answer. But Google is still a relatively new player in Enterprise Search, and will certainly get attention at that price point.
Verity International User Group Meets March 13 - 16 in Miami
Verity has announced its major user group meeting, Connections 2005. It looks to be a promising three day event, to be held at the Eden Roc Resort and Spa in Miami Florida.
