Google jumps to Desktop
The October 13 meeting of the Silicon Valley Webguild featured a panel discussion on Enterprise Search sponsored by Verity and New Idea Engineering. The presentation featured representatives from Verity, Google, Endeca and FAST, joined by Laura Ramos of Forrester Research and Miles Kehoe of New Idea Engineering. One of the audience members asked about desktop search, and there was a candid discussion about technology and pricing.
The next morning, Google announced their Google Desktop Search.
You'll remember we discussed Lookout Software and its recent acquisition by Microsoft. Now the competition has arrived. Google Desktop lets you Outlook and Outlook Express messages, AOL instant message discussions, web sites browsed using Internet Explorer, text files and Microsoft Office files on your system.
Once installed, when you go to Google, one of the options above the normal Google search box is "Desktop". Click there, and your Google search is local.
Lacking in this first version - nominally still in beta test - is PDF support, and support for non-Microsoft browsers. Stay tuned.
